Agenor Calcaria is one of the longest serving members of the Helyan Senate. He is highly regarded by his peers. although his temperate, thoughtful approach to political matters has frequently annoyed certain individuals within the Senate, such as Augustine Leippa and Thassus Pi, who craved to wield power in a more autocratic fashion.
Agenor was raised on the banks of the Mymidon River which run from the mountains in northern Helyas down through the metropolis of Taranis on its way down to the western coast of Helyas. He lived a simple childhood except for one remarkable event. One day he fell into the famous rapids to the north of Taranis and was plucked out of the surging river by the Morgai Gideon Grayson. Grayson had been led to that place by the Morgai seer Lilith Cortese.
Although he was a proud pacifist, Agenor was responsible for formulating Black Shields, Helyas' military elite. Agenor had frequently voiced concerns about the blood spilled during the Forging, Helyas' bloody games held in the city of Palomides, but he was not convinced that the Helyan military had no part to play in the country's future. Agenor hoped that the Black Shields would change the Senate's general perception that the Helyan miliary was little more than a gang of thugs. Within a few years of the inception of the Black Shields, record numbers of Helyan youths signed up for the military, in the hope that one day they too would join this elite band of soldiers. Unfortunately, the strain this situation placed upon the public coffers caused great division within the Senate which was by this stage committed to more civic-minded projects such as the construction of the great statues upon the walls of Sulis.
