The bobug is the largest insect found in the Myr. It is also one of the most intelligent. The bobug can grow up to two hundred feet long. At birth they are already fifty feet long.
Whilst all bobugs look as if they have a hard, black shell, the female's exoskeleton is partly translucent, which allows for its unique phosphorescent blood to light the creature's way in the darkness. It also uses this light to attract a male. The Acora believe that by keeping the female without a mate, the glow just emanates naturally whenever it finds itself in darkness. Before the coming of the shatterbugs, the Acora used bobug blood as a source of illumination.
The bobug is used by the Acora for a number of domestic tasks such as ploughing and bearing heavy goods, but one of the most unusual is as a mode of transportation across the underground passage known as the Way. The Acora lined this subterranean route under the Acoran Ranges with thousands of rings that the bobug swings on with its hook claws as it hurtles its way from one end of the Way to the other.
The bobug is cold-blooded and requires the heat of the sun to stay alive. Although Acoran winters are not particularly long or hard, the bobug will fall into a state of hibernation whenever sunlight is not available for an extended period of time.
Bobugs are herbivores and a single can consume over a tonne of sweetgrass in a few days. Many ranches can be found along the banks of the Naiyeni where sweetgrass grows in abundance. Breeding bobugs is a lucrative business in Acoran. They are worth a lot of money largely due to the fact that a female bobug will only give birth to one child in its lifetime. The gestation period for a bobug is three years. This has helped keep their numbers down despite the number of bobug farms that can be found in Acoran.
The most famous bobug was a creature called Ema. This particular bobug was a gift from the Queen of Acoran to the people of Harvagor. Ema was reported to be the fasted bobug in all Acoran and was used by Acoran royalty whenever they needed to traverse the Way.
