Lilith Cortese told King Tobias Carrucan of Acoran his future and when the good things she foretold came to pass, he was so delighted with his good fortune, he sent messengers to Pelinore to tell the seer she could have any gift she wanted. Lilith thought about this offer and told the messengers she wanted a gift that would stay with her for a lifetime. She hoped they would return with a bunch of eternal roses but this was not to be the case. King Tobias misconstrued her request and sent back a praga fish from the Naiyeni River. The praga fish were known to live for over 200 hundred years, so King Tobias thought it would be a perfect present for a Morgai who could expect to live just as long.
Unfortunately for the praga fish, which Lilith named Brutus, it did not live longer than a month in the bowl she placed it in. Hearing of this, King Tobias sent her another fish which she also named Brutus but it too died after a number of weeks. King Tobias would not see his debt unpaid so he continued to send her fish after fish, all of which she named Brutus and all of which died. The sending of the praga fish became a tradition and when King Tobias eventually died, his daughter Queen Ana continued the tradition though she had never met Lilith Cortese.
