The buzzbeetle can be found in abundance in Nessa where it transforms the pollen of flowerfall into amber nectar inside intricately-constructed hives that Nessan apiarists plunder to produce honeyjuice. The buzzbeetles' hives are usually found nestled into the boughs of tall trees but Nessans have also been successful in creating artificial hives which has led to increased production of honeyjuice over recent decades.
The buzzbeetle is a large insect, roughly the size of a man's fist. Distinct red and blue stripes cover much of its body. It has two sets of wings on its back and these can produce an incredibly loud buzzing sound which can be used as an indicator of the buzzbeetle's mood. When aroused, angry or excited, a cloud of buzzbeetles can produce a literally defeaning droning noise that is used to keep predators - and apiarists - away from the hive. Nessans quickly realised that a deaf person was immune to this defence and this explains the Nessan phrase 'as deaf as an apiarist.'
The buzzbeetle is also armed with a sting that it can shoot at any aggressor. This sting is not particularly painful of its own, but it is usually coated with a secretion that could be likened to an aphrodisiac. This is only successful when two individuals have been stung by the same buzzbeetle. There are many couples across Nessa who fell in love at the end of a buzzbeetle's sting. There are also documented cases of people who have killed others in passionate fights for another's affection when more than two people have been stung by the same buzzbeetle.
