Capaneus Bellerophon was born in the seaside city of Corineus and always had dreams of living a life on a sailing ship. But a day came when it was Corineus' turn to take part in the bloody rite of passage known as the Festival of the Forging and he was terrified he would die.
Knowing he could not refuse to go, Capaneus joined other youths from his city and took the long grizzum-led wagon to Palomides, the city-sized area where the festival took place.
When the contest began, Capaneus found a nook between two walls where he could hide until the carnage was almost over. When it looked like Corineus had won the fight, he merged from his hiding spot and secretly cut himself over to create the appearance of someone who had battled in the festival.
And so he survived the Forging and lived long enough to achieve his dream of working on a ship, all the while carrying the guilt and shame of his actions as a youth, little knowing that there were hundreds of Helyans who had done exactly the same thing when faced with the Festival of the Forging.
