Caliban's End

Cephalus Silenus

Cephalus Silenus is one of the most influential Myrrans of all time.  Born in Sulis, he studied the art of potion-making and was ridiculed for it by most of his peers who believed the practice to be unworthy of a Helyan's attention.  Cephalus was appalled by Helyas' preoccupatuion with violence and before his time had come to compete in the Festival of the Forging he left Sulis and wandered out into the desert north of the Mymidon where he was left alone to pursue his interests.  He would have stayed there had it not been for the rising conflict in the Myr that began with the slaughter of a Tuirrenian priest in Palomides and reached its peak when the Arnakki stole into Pelinore one night and slaughtered 360 Scorian priests.

Cephalus refused to believe in any deities and it sickened him to see so many die in wars that had been sustained by religious differences.  He devised a drug that would make all church-goers see what their religion required them to see and he encouraged all Myrrans to pray together.  There was much animosity towards his suggestion but gradually as more and more Myrrans tried what he suggestion and prayed alongside one another under the influence of the tablets he provided, the world began to change.  It shouldn't have happened but it did.  Places such as Garlot Abbey became full with people of all races, coming together in religious activity and despite their differences they saw nothing that was contrary to their beliefs.

Cephalus put one proviso on the arrangement - all churchgoers had to donate a coin for the Almoners as a sign of their desire to let go of their sins and transgressions.  Although this seemed like an overt act of exploitation, none were prepared for the feeling of absolution that washed over them when they handed over the coin.

That was over 500 years ago and Cephalus now lives out of the public eye in the peaceful Grove of Nemetona.  Many have assumed he is Morgai but even a Morgai's life would have expired by now.  Cephalus explains his longevity in a cryptic way - "I exist because I have to" - and this seems enough for most Myrrans.
