This sketch was done in 1999, so it's a bit old now! It's not a great picture from an artistic point of view, but it is an important sketch all the same. This was the doodle on an airplane that started the whole story. When I drew it, I had no idea where I was going with it. I was just passing the time as my wife watched an in-flight movie. I like the idea of the snail being combined with a horse, and although the name is painfully obvious, I like the quirkiness of it all. The irony of such an animal (i.e. a snail-like creature) being used for transportation is the kind of embellishment I am looking for in my narrative. A few weeks ago, I hired The Never-Ending Story for my son to watch. When I saw the speedy snail creature in the movie, I realised that this must have influenced me in the creation of the snorse.
