Stonemites

Whilst the stonemite can only be found in one place in the Myr - in the Stone Forest of Tethra - it is reckoned that there exist more of these small, grey-skinned anthropods than any other creature in existence.  They occupy the stone plinths that cover the southern half of Tethra.  These obelisks are actually composed of excreted granite that the stonemite produces after every meal.  This explains why the region is described as a forest - the plinths grow each year as the stonemites continually deposit their waste product.

The stonemite will eat just about anything.  It will dine on the rotting carcasses of animals and will readily eat bones just as it will consume meat.  It will usually leave Myrrans alone unless they attack the stonemites directly.  Each plinth is actually a hive made up of many intricate social arrangements.  Near the top of each plinth is a small opening which serves as the entry to the hive.  Just inside this opening lies the chamber where the queen dwells.  She is larger than the other stonemites - much of her abdomen is made up of a sack containing a foul-smelling yellow secretion which she will use to attract a mate which is a common occurrence - the queen will mate once a week.  She is blessed with an extremely short gestation period.  Within a day of mating, she will produce up to a thousand offspring.  Many of these will be eaten by the other stonemites in the hive but a few will survive and quickly grow into workers or soldier mites that will protect the hive from all attackers.

The stonemite has only one natural predator but it is a formidable foe - the durnodaw.  These strange birds live on the plateau above the Stone Forest, but at nightfall they will make the quick flight down to the forest and scour the area for stonemites.  Sometimes they will attack a hive directly, but usually do not need to as it is common to find the mites wandering the floor of the forest at night, foraging for food.
